Establish a mission, offer to help each other during tough times, and share useful resources.

  3️⃣  Follow a role model

Consider whether you know anyone who has overcome similar obstacles and review the strategies or steps they took.

  4️⃣  Change your mindset

Consider what the team may gain from the circumstances, discuss what made it challenging, and decide what steps to take next.

  6️⃣  Build confidence

By focusing on positive results and decision-making to overcome an obstacle, you can also influence your coworkers to take action.

Understanding Resilience

Resilience is the ability to bounce back from setbacks, adapt to change, and thrive in the face of adversity.

It involves maintaining a positive mindset, managing stress, and leveraging strengths and resources to overcome challenges.

Building Resilience

  1️⃣  Personal Resilience

a) Growth Mindset β€” When faced with a complex project, view it as a chance to expand your knowledge and problem-solving abilities, rather than being overwhelmed by its complexity.

b) Self-Care β€” Take short breaks during the workday to stretch, practice, or engage in deep breathing exercises to recharge and reduce stress.

c) Seek Support β€” Reach out to a trusted colleague or mentor when facing a professional setback to gain valuable insights.

  2️⃣  Workplace Resilience

a) Open Communication β€” Hold regular team meetings where employees can voice their opinions, provide updates, and address challenges collectively.

b) Learning Environment β€” Offer lunch-and-learn sessions where employees can share their knowledge and expertise with their peers.

c) Supportive Relationships β€” Implement a mentorship program where experienced employees can provide guidance and support to newer team members.

LEADing yourself and others through adversity

From Adversity Quotient: Turning Obstacles into Opportunities by Paul Stoltz

Audio version (Time: 01:26)

What is your Adversity Quotient?

Your Adversity Quotient (AQ) is a measure of how resilient you are in the face of trials and tribulations, in a similar way to Intelligence Quotient (IQ) is a measure of your intellectual capabilities.

AQ is measured by working out your CO2RE results.

Your CO2RE

How to Do It:

1. LISTEN β€” You must first recognize adversity when it is striking.

When you get a new car you start notice on the road the same model as yours. Those cars were there in the past, but you never noticed because you were not looking for them. Similarly we can attune our senses to detect when adversity is striking and focus on adjusting our response.

The key is to recognise, not dwell.

2. EXPLORE origins of the adversity and your ownership of the result.

At this point in the process you have to ask yourself three questions. What are the possible origins of this adversity? What part of this was my fault? What specifically could I have done better?

3. ANALYSE the evidence.

What evidence is there that this adversity will affect the rest of our life? What evidence it will last and have no control?

An example of someone answering these questions properly was Erik. He was the first blind person to climb the tallest peaks on each continent.

He answered the question β€œwhat evidence is there that blindness prevents me from mountain climbing?” with the simple response β€œnone”.

4. DO something.

Begin by asking yourselves: What information do I need? What can I do to get some control? What can I do to limit the reach and duration of this adversity? Then get out and act.
