People-Centric Culture: What It Is & How to Build

by QuestionPro

Audio version (Time: 01:01)

What is a People-Centric Culture?

A people-centric culture means that the people in charge deeply understand what their team members need, find out what they need to do their best work, and have a happy workplace culture.

How to build a people-centric culture

STEPS

PRACTICE

1️⃣  Consider how and why your people are feeling

Emotional employee engagement surveys work best for this

  2️⃣  Establish a People-Centric Culture

Establish communication channels that employees can utilize and trust

  3️⃣  Boost inclusion and diversity

Your people will thrive if they feel involved, respected, and supported.

75% of top executives would quit for a diverse organization.

4️⃣  Encourage work with a purpose

Leaders and management must distinguish how and why employees operate

  5️⃣  Prioritize learning management

Make staff learning a strategic goal to start. Training boosts productivity and skill sets and improves your worker’s engagement

  6️⃣  Performance analysis feedback

Individuals who receive performance analysis feedback can gauge their progress more frequently

Google's 20% Time: Fostering Innovation and Employee Empowerment

by Robert Baines

The idea behind 20% time

Google employees are encouraged to spend 20% of their work hours, or one day a week, working on projects of their choice, unrelated to their regular job responsibilities.

Gmail, Google News, and Google Maps all had their origins in 20% time projects.

Lessons for Other Organizations

1️⃣  While giving employees autonomy is crucial, it's equally important to establish clear guidelines and expectations to ensure that 20% time projects align with the company's goals.

2️⃣  Encourage a culture that values experimentation and embraces failure as a learning opportunity. Create a safe space for employees to take risks.

3️⃣  Support employees in acquiring new skills and knowledge during their 20% time. This can have long-term benefits for both individuals and the organization.

4️⃣  Recognize that what works for a tech giant like Google might not be directly applicable to smaller companies. Adapt the concept to your organization's size and resources.

LET’S PRACTICE 🧪

Reveal the People-Centric Approach

From Irresistible: The Seven Secrets of the World's Most Enduring, Employee-Focused Organizations by Josh Bersin

Audio version (Time: 01:15)

What is the People-Centric Approach?

Being people-centric means always putting your people at the center of your actions. It restores the “human” element to human resources.

How to Do It:

🎯Purpose and Meaning

Create a clear and compelling organizational narrative that resonates with employees and helps them understand how their work contributes to the bigger picture.

🎯Autonomy and Freedom

Implement autonomous work practices, such as Google’s famous “20% time” policy, which allows employees to dedicate 20% of their work time to side projects they are passionate about.

🎯Personalization and Customization

Personalize and customize the employee experience, such as IBM’s “My IBM Experience” program, which allows employees to customize their work experiences and work tools.

🎯Employee Advocacy and Brand Ambassadors

Empower passionate employees to share their experiences and perspectives with external stakeholders.
