How to Conduct an Effective Cultural Fit Assessment by AIHR |
What is a cultural fit assessment?
Cultural fit assessment is a combination of methods designed to determine a candidate’s cultural fit during the recruitment and selection process by collecting and analyzing a series of data.
This can include pre-employment assessments, personality questionnaires, or cultural-specific interview questions.
How to Do It?
1. Know your company culture
✦ To analyze existing culture, you can use a validated assessment such as Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument (OCAI).
✦ Make time to regularly discuss and proactively define your company culture, and make sure everyone is on board.
2. Compare candidates’ preferences to your culture
✦ The International Personality Item Pool (IPIP-NEO) test helps you measure how culturally compatible a candidate is with your organization.
3. Ask cultural fit questions in your interviews
✦ Behavioral and motivation-indicator questions help delve deeper into your candidate’s values, behaviors, and motivations.
4. Give candidates a chance for a self-assessment
✦ Take them for a tour around the workplace, let observe some of your teams in action, and ask current employees questions about their role.
5. Understand the results holistically
✦ A performance-values matrix can help you take a holistic view of all the results you obtain and then make a confident and informed decision on each candidate.

Uncover Your Prospective Firm’s Culture From Job Seeker Manual: A Step-by-Step Guide for Using Culture Fit to Find the Right Workplace for You by Sheila L. Margolis |
Analyze an organization where you might work by examining several crucial factors. Start with its “three P’s of core culture – purpose, philosophy and priorities.” These three pivotal elements of its culture indicate a firm’s “authentic nature.”
How to Do It:
“Uncover a company’s core culture by investigating the images a company projects.”
“Learn about all facets of the organization – how employees work with each other…how employees interact with their customers, vendors and business partners…and how the company presents itself to the public.”
“Look for company values listed on the company website. Check out sections such as ‘About Us or ‘Careers’ to uncover the values the company is sharing with the public.”
“Several Internet sites…provide information on companies and their culture…search sites like GlassDoor.com, Vault.com, TheMuse.com and CareerBliss.com.”
“If you go for an interview, observe how you are treated – before, during and after the interview. Even the environment where the interview takes place can reveal clues about the company’s character.”
