What is HR communication?

HR communication is a two-way process that involves information being sent from HR to employees and from employees up to HR.

Employees who feel their voice is heard are 4.6 times more likely to be empowered to perform their best work; a 5% increase in employee engagement can lead to a 3% jump in revenue.

How to Build an Effective Communication Strategy

1. Define your employee segments

✦ Employee segmentation enables you to identify different employee groups in the organization – based on similarities such as roles, geographical area, gender, age, behaviors, and interests – so you can design customized practices based on the common characteristics.

2. Value proposition and communication goals

Performance: Improving HR communication so that it’s faster, easily accessible

Customization: Tailoring communication services to the specific needs of internal customer segments

✦ ‘Getting the job done: Creating value by enabling employees to get the job done better and more efficiently.

✦ Convenience: Making things more convenient or easier to use can create substantial value for employees.

3. Define your HR communication channels

✦ Today, digital communication channels – email, internal communication platforms, employee collaboration software, intranets, internal podcasts, internal company blogs – are the most popular in the workplace.

✦ To determine which channels are most suitable for your different employee segments, think about what you’re communicating and in which direction the communication is flowing.

Even if you haven’t taken the time to sit down with your employees to articulate and communicate your company’s set of values, one thing is for sure: these values drive everything you and your company do, whether you’re aware of their impact or not.

How to Do It:

Once the values are clearly defined, they must be heard/seen as the company’s authentic voice. The company can seek that through telling stories. Not any story, real stories of real people.

Employees are the brand ambassadors. Their level of engagement in the brand’s mission is defining their performance when no one’s looking.

Employees need to feel trusted and empowered to live the company’s values. Education, mentorship, and rewards, when well established, become empowering.

It’s important to keep honesty and authenticity upfront because these are one of the most valued virtues and they are what make the company stand from the crowd and be original.

Some companies opted for having a “Chief Culture Officer” to help keep the company’s values alive and cooperate with the chief financial officer.
